A Walled Hermitage in the Tradition of the Desert Fathers
We are working hard at building our humble yet beautiful hermitage for the glory of God and for the blessedness of His people! In all of our work here, we are keeping an ongoing journal and gathering documentation so as to apply for an “LEED 5” designation for our monastery once it is completed. This monastery will be a natural fit for our high desert landscape at the foot of the Manzano Mountains in the Central New Mexico wilderness. Nature, in all of its stark harshness, is all around us; but in this arid land, monks and the rest of God’s people find a simplicity and solitude that harkens them to enter into the reality of love for the All Holy Trinity and His pilgriming people.
As we lay foundational stones and adobe blocks (CEBs) one by one, each block overlapping another, we see that there is a harkening to the words of Saint Peter when he tells us and all generations:
“Come to him, to that living stone, rejected by men but in God’s sight chosen and precious; and like living stones be yourselves built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
— 1 Peter 2:4-5
